Candies, balloons and streamers, oh my!

Destined to become the newest destination for fun in West Oahu, The Party Store Hawaii held its grand opening last month at Ka Makana Alii Shopping Center in Kapolei.
Owner Leslie Nollie explained that she decided to open the business to help fill a service gap in the area. After being in the events industry for more than 10 years, Nollie noticed that even with a high number of events and parties in West Oahu, there was a lack of services, products and support.
“We hope to become a partner with the Ewa, Kapolei and Waianae communities. We are unique in that we offer not just party supplies, but the supporting services that help build the event, such as concession rentals and customized decorations,” Nollie emphasized. “We want to operate at a personal level with each customer that walks in. Our goal is to provide top-notch customer service with a personalized touch.” She added that she and the employees love parties, too.
The Party Store Hawaii sells party and crafts supplies, balloons, and party rentals. The establishment even has a fun workshop area.
“We plan to host classes, but it is really designed as a DIY (do-it-yourself) workshop area that clients can use to create their own party favors, centerpieces and more. It’s super fun. We also pride ourselves in events management and vendor coordination. We work with many wonderful local vendors that we are glad to refer out,” Nollie declared.
The Party Store Hawaii staff is always available to help come up with some creative ideas for each unique event, she stressed. It also does event planning for weddings, corporate events, graduations and even birthday parties.
“We also cater heavily to keiki. We love our keiki and hope to one day be able to offer scholarships and internships,” she said.
Nollie wants to be able to offer these scholarships and internships to the community’s students in middle school and high school, giving them an opportunity to learn basic business management skills and obtain real life job experience.
“We are calling this our Business Pathways Program, which we hope to tie into school programs where they can get credit. This is a big dream!” she said.
As The Party Store Hawaii continues to work toward future goals, Nollie is setting up an inviting environment for customers and employees alike. Her first step is wrapping up the store’s website, which is still under construction, and she seeks to have it finished this month.
Workplace culture is based around the company’s belief and mission to promote fun, Nollie explained.
“Every customer should feel like they are our only customer. We want to know your name, know what you’re planning and help you customize your event so that it is memorable and fun,” she stressed.
When it comes to employees, Nollie said she looks for creative minds who can assist customers in producing that one-of-a-kind event. She is especially interested in adding strong leadership to her team.
Employment positions, require fun-loving, imaginative personalities who enjoy party planning, event design, balloon art, and more, she said.
Desired skills and characteristics of employees are interpersonal skills, good communication and an easygoing personality. Additionally, Nollie looks for people who are proactive, innovative, have computer knowledge, balloon art skills, and experience in digital arts and media.
Employee Adrenne Matsuyama said, “I enjoy working at The Party Store because I love being of service to others. I love helping customers create the party they’ve always dreamed of, while shopping local and because every day is a reason to celebrate.” Matsuyama added that she also enjoys working alongside the “best team ever” at The Party Store Hawaii, praising the family-like feeling of it.
“We really want to create an inviting, fun environment for customers, so that they feel like part of our family,” said Nollie. “We really want to connect with the community on a personal level. So far we have gotten a really great response from the local community who is happy to have us here at Ka Makana Alii Shopping Center. We hope to be here for many years to come!”
